In my experience, this very hard to find optical sensor is one of the most frequently defective parts in a Autotrol Logix 740 or 760 softener valve control. Why replace the motor assembly and all the cables for or more when you only need one small part for less than a quarter of that? If your softener cam turns constantly and there is an error code displayed on the controller screen, this part may be the cause.
Instructions to replace the part:
Remove the cover from your softener and disconnect the power. Unclip the top of the electronic controller and let it hang forwards. Twist the motor to unlock it from its brackets and slide it out of the back. Push the cam backwards to disengage it. Pop out the old optical sensor (squeeze the feet together from the front). Unplug the cable from the old sensor and plug it carefully into the new one (it should slide in easily, if there is any resistance one of the pins in the connector may be a little bent). Clip the new sensor in where the old one was. Reposition the cam (there's a small arrow on top of the wheel at the front of the cam to help you orientate it). Replace the motor in its original position and twist it to lock it back into its brackets. Replace the electronic controller, connect the power, set the time and then replace the cover. Done! the whole procedure should take less than 5 minutes.
